Rep. Nancy Mace Releases Statement on Visit To Al Cannon Detention Center
Rep. Nancy Mace (SC-01) on Monday visited the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in Charleston County in the aftermath of the sixth death at the facility in the past year.
Following the visit, she released this statement:
“The deputies at the Al Cannon Detention Center welcomed Teddie Pryor of the Charleston County Council, Herb Sass, Chairman of the Charleston County Council, and myself yesterday morning on our visit. A statistically significant portion of the folks at the Charleston County Detention Center have mental health issues, but this is not a mental health hospital. Significant resources for mental health services need to be allocated for facilities like this. Additionally, we need to address staffing shortages and find ways to better compensate our law enforcement officers within these facilities. We also need to ensure the medical provider and supporting detention center staff are upholding their services at the facility.”
