An attorney for the mother of Stephen Smith, the Hampton County teen whose 2015 death was recently ruled to be a homicide, confirmed media reports that Smith’s body was exhumed and examined over the weekend. Smith’s death was originally proclaimed to be the result of a highway vehicular manslaughter.

SLED reopened Smith’s case in June 2021 after discovering new evidence during their investigation into the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh. State police have also revealed that they were waiting until the Murdaugh trial was over before making this announcement out of concern that witnesses would not be as forthcoming under the “Murdaugh sphere of influence.”

The investigation into the death of Stephen Smith is ongoing, and SLED officials are urging anyone with information about the case to come forward. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact SLED’s tip line at 1-800-CALL-SLED.
