Inclusive Surfing on Folly Beach: Charleston County Parks’ Wheel to Surf Event Returns in May
On Saturday, May 6th, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) will partner with other organizations to provide individuals with physical disabilities an opportunity to experience surfing. Called Wheel to Surf, the event is held at Folly Beach County Park.
Adaptive surfing staff from partner organizations Ocean Cure, Adaptive Surf Project, Coastal Adaptive Sports, and Adaptive Expeditions will provide instruction and assistance in a controlled environment.
Participation is free, but prior to registration, participants must meet guidelines posted on CharlestonCountyParks.com. Registration is required and closes May 5th at 2 pm. Sign up and read guidelines at CharlestonCountyParks.com.
This unique program will be offered during a morning session from 9 am to 11:30 am, as well as an afternoon session from 12:30 pm to 3 pm. Each registered participant will enjoy a 20-minute session on the water. All surfing equipment is provided.
“We are thrilled to once again be hosting Wheel to Surf at Folly Beach County Park, along with our wonderful non-profit partners,” said Steve Hutton, director of recreation and ADA coordinator for CCPRC. “This exciting event provides opportunities for those with disabilities to experience surfing, something many of us take for granted, and is another important piece of CCPRC’s work to improve access and inclusion throughout our system.”
CCPRC will host other inclusive events throughout the year, including the Inclusive Superhero Dance on May 10, Inclusive Swim Nights at the waterparks and West County Aquatic Center on select evenings this summer, and the annual Inclusive Prom at the R.L. Jones Center in August. The Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission invites people with disabilities to experience its programs, services, trails and facilities to discover how they can enrich their lives.
