Operation Dog Rescue: A Berkeley-Charleston Animal Emergency
Berkeley Animal Center and Charleston Animal Society are coming together for a joint adoption campaign to save the lives of healthy dogs who are in desperate need of loving homes.
“The goal of Operation Dog Rescue is to help empty the animal shelters in Berkeley and Charleston that are currently over capacity,” said No Kill South Carolina 2024 Chief Project Officer Abigail Appleton, PMP, CAWA. “At Berkeley County, animals are being placed in temporary crates.”
People can help in one of three key ways:
1. Adopt an adult dog at no cost this weekend
2. Foster an adult dog and the shelters will provide all supplies
3. Tell a friend or family member about the dog adoption campaign
Adoption fees at both shelters are waived this weekend. To encourage adoption, the shelters are also offering a 35-lbs. bag of Hill’s Science Diet dog food to the first 25 adopters at each location.
“This is a desperate plea to help us empty the shelter for the health and welfare of these amazing dogs,” said Berkely Animal Center Director Heather McDowell. “We have the capacity for 100 dogs, and we are already beyond that. We believe that every shelter dog deserves a loving home and special one-on-one attention, instead of sitting in a kennel.”
For the first time, Charleston Animal Society is sending three staff members to help Berkeley Animal Center with adoptions on Saturday during special hours 10 am to 5 pm. Charleston Animal Society will also be open during the same hours.
“Operation Dog Rescue is an opportunity for animal lovers to come together and help make a difference in the lives of these furry friends. We hope that the community will come out and show their support, and help us find loving homes for all of these dogs in need,” said McDowell.
