Park Circle Gallery to Exhibit Works by Christopher Dotson
The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that paintings by Charleston based artist Christopher Dotson will be on display at Park Circle Gallery from May 3-26, 2023. Christopher is the winner of the 2023 North Charleston Arts Fest Poster Design Competition and his winning design, Forms in a Landscape, will be featured in the exhibition, which is presented as a component of the annual North Charleston Arts Fest. A free public reception will be held at the gallery from 5 pm to 7 pm on Friday, May 5th.
In his solo exhibition, titled Unbound, Christopher Dotson presents a collection of recent paintings in acrylic and oil. Dotson’s canvases are filled with abstract shapes resembling different animals, plants, water, trees, rocks, birds, and fish. These organic forms appear to float in their own space, like hieroglyphs. Raindrops and tears swirl their way through imaginary landscapes that are filled with colorful life. Everything seems unbound from reality, appearing to have been disassembled and reassembled as if chopped up in a blender and poured out onto the painting’s surface. According to Christopher “It is an ecosystem where color and form are arbitrary, spontaneous, and mysterious.”
Christopher Dotson earned a BFA from Appalachian State University in 1996. His paintings have been featured in a number of juried and group exhibitions throughout Charleston, SC, and Boston, MA, as well as on the CBS series Reckless and the Netflix series Outer Banks. He is currently represented by Mary Martin Gallery in Charleston, SC. His winning design, Forms in a Landscape, was one of 62 entries from 33 artists working in 12 cities across South Carolina that were submitted for consideration for the 2023 North Charleston Arts Fest Poster Design Competition. The piece is now part of the City of North Charleston’s Public Art Collection. Learn more about the artist at dotsonart.com.
