Charleston Wine + Food Releases Economic Impact Data
According to a new study conducted by the College of Charleston Office of Tourism Analysis, the Charleston Wine + Food Festival generated nearly $32 million in economic impact this year. The overall economic impact for 2023 was a 20.26% increase over 2022.
The 17th celebration attracted more than 38,000 attendees, 57.3% of whom were local. Individuals visiting from out of town increased over 2022, with travel party sizes averaging four individuals and staying four nights. For out of towners, 87.4% reported the Festival was their primary motivation for visiting the region during this time period, and just over 53% of overnight stays were concentrated in downtown Charleston.
“There’s a clear hunger in the marketplace for experiences that deliver meaningful connection and fun, in equal measure,” said Executive Director, Alyssa Maute Smith.
Numbers released this week by the festival – designed using Qualtrics.com and distributed by researchers at the College of Charleston – indicate the Festival delivered on its promise to improve guest experience, especially in the Culinary Village. Surveys indicate a 33% increase in people reporting they “thoroughly” enjoyed the Festival, relative to 2022, with a 92.3% increase in those strongly agreeing with the sentiment.
