Youth Triathlon Returns to James Island County Park in June
In association with youth and junior triathlon coaching specialists Palmetto TRIbe, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) will host its annual Youth Triathlon on Saturday, June 17th at James Island County Park. The event is open to ages 7 to 15.
This multi-sport event is the only youth triathlon in the area to offer an open-water swim, providing an excellent opportunity for youth to experience a lake swim on a safe, well-monitored course. After the swim, participants will traverse the shaded paths and roads inside James Island County Park on the run and bike courses. The Youth Triathlon course is fully contained inside the park and the open-water swim will be monitored by CCPRC’s safety and lifeguarding teams.
The registration fee for the race is $50. Preregistration is required and ends Monday, June 12th. Registration is available at https://ccprc.com/3291/Youth-Triathlon.
The Youth Triathlon will begin at 7:15 am. Distances will vary based on the age of participants. Ages 11-15 will complete a 200-yard swim, a 6-mile bike, and a 2-mile run. Ages 7-10 will complete a 100-yard swim, 3-mile bike, and a 1-mile run. Course maps are available online.
Bibs and helmets are required. Bikes should be race-ready. On-site emergency bike repair will be available.
Youth Triathlon race registration also includes a t-shirt, finisher medal, post-race food, and free entry to the Splash Zone Waterpark on race day. Finisher medal must be presented to gain entry.
An awards ceremony will be held on-site post-race. Water stations will be set up on the course.
On June 12, a Youth Triathlon Swim Clinic with Palmetto Tribe youth and junior triathlon coaches will be held at James Island County Park. The clinic is from 6-7 p.m. and is an additional fee of $15 per participant. This is an excellent opportunity for participants to become more familiar with the actual swim course before the event. Previously held in late July, this year’s Youth Triathlon was moved to the same weekend as Father’s Day as well as Race 2 of the Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series, making it a big weekend for triathlete families in the Lowcountry.
