Press Release

Berkeley County Library System (BCLS), in collaboration with Charleston Stage, is proud to present a free, fully-staged, professional production of Robert Lewis Stevenson’s pirate classic, Treasure Island, on Saturday, May 20th at 6 pm at St. Stephen Library, located at 113 Ravenell Drive, St. Stephen.

There will be an opening act performance by the Bluegrass band, Dottie and the Boys. This is an hour-long family musical comedy production, produced as part of Charleston Stage’s free City Stage Community Tour. Customers are encouraged to bring any number of friends and family, blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the free live performance. If there is a chance of rain, the event will be rescheduled for May 22nd.

In an adaptation set in the South Carolina Lowcountry by Artistic Director, Emeritus, Julian Wiles, Treasure Island tells the classic coming-of-age pirate tale accompanied by a rousing score of Gilbert and Sullivan sea shanty tunes.  Familiar swashbuckling pirate characters such as Long John Silver, Anne Bonny, and Stede Bonnet take to the stage in this rip-roaring pirate romp.  The production features colorful costume, brilliant lights, and dazzling sets on a grand outdoor stage.

“The St. Stephen Library is so excited to be included in the outreach program of The Charleston Stage’s Production of Treasure Island,” said Karen Altman, Branch Manager. “This is such a wonderful opportunity for the rural community to experience this theatrical performance. Please join us on May 20th at 6 pm in the park next to the library at 113 Ravenell Drive. Bring your friends, family, blankets and lawn chairs for an evening to remember!”
