WATCH: SC House Democrats File Over 1,000 Amendments to Abortion Ban as it Comes to the Floor
Ahead of a floor debate on an abortion ban in the South Carolina House of Representatives, the Democratic women of the House on Wednesday brought over 1,000 amendments into the House chamber for debate on the bill which began on Thursday morning. You can watch the moment below (screen capture can be seen on the right).
S. 474 was passed by the Senate earlier this year and bans abortions – with limited exceptions – at six weeks.
Even though the state Supreme Court struck down a six-week ban earlier this year, the lone female judge on the court has since retired and was replaced, giving Republicans confidence that this new ban would get a new ruling.
The Senate’s ban passed out of the House Judiciary Committee late Tuesday night after hours of debate. Here’s a clip of State Representative Spencer Wetmore (D-Charleston) responding to questions from State Representative John McCravy (R-Greenwood) about her amendment to remove the six week requirement and extend it to 24 weeks.
