Rep. JA Moore Releases Statement Regarding Gov. McMaster’s “Hunt Them with Dogs” Comment
Following a comment from Gov. Henry McMaster at the South Carolina Republican Convention in Columbia on Saturday where he said, “I look forward to the day that Democrats are so rare, we have to hunt them with dogs,” State Representative JA Moore (D-Berkeley) released the following statement:
“Gov. McMaster’s comment about hunting for Democrats with dogs is a chilling reminder of the violence that has plagued South Carolina and America since its inception. I’m often reminded of what my father told me about the fight for freedom that he – along with so many brave civil rights leaders – championed during the Civil Rights movement. It was during this time that dogs were literally unleashed on Black Americans peacefully protesting for their freedom.
The attempt to downplay his harmful words as a joke or say that people offended by his dangerous comments are overreacting is disingenuous. The governor has a long record of making similar comments.
We’ve come a long way since the days of my father, when using dogs to hunt people was a reality, not a joke. We aren’t going back to those days. The sons and daughters of my father’s generation won’t allow it.”
