South Carolina Democratic Party Releases Statement on Passage of Abortion Ban
The South Carolina Senate on Tuesday approved a bill that would ban most abortions after around six weeks of pregnancy, which is before most people even know they are pregnant. The bill now heads to Governor Henry McMaster who has previously said he will sign it.
The South Carolina Democratic Party released the following statement after the abortion ban’s passing:
“In a move that will undoubtedly hurt communities across our state, abortion is now set to be banned in South Carolina before many women even know they’re pregnant, doctors and nurses could be threatened with jail time for providing their patients with the care they need, and Black women, low-income families, and rural areas who already face insurmountable barriers to health care will be disproportionately impacted. In passing this ban, South Carolina Republicans are following the MAGA standards set forth by the folks vying for the top of their ticket —including South Carolina’s very own, Nikki Haley and Tim Scott — who have all embraced abortion bans of their own.
This cruel ban rips away a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions with her doctor, and puts it in the hands of out-of-touch politicians who care nothing about women’s health care and all about their MAGA agenda.”
