Roper St. Francis Physicians Endowment Fund Awards $10,000 Grant to Support the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired SC
Roper St. Francis Physicians Endowment Fund (Medical Society) has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired South Carolina (ABVI). Through the Medical Society’s grant, ABVI will be able to provide comprehensive travel skills training, assistive technology training and individual therapy for adults who are blind or visually impaired in the Tri-County to help them move safely through their environments while also tracking the impact the development of these skills has on their mental health.
By funding the orientation and mobility training ABVI provides, the Medical Society is helping ABVI’s clients along on their journey to independence and allowing them to learn to safely navigate their environment. Funding will also support assistive technology training in which adults with visual disabilities will learn to use various mobile device apps and low vision devices to assist them with their transportation and mobility needs. With this grant funding, ABVI will also be able to track the impact this skills training has on clients’ mental health over the course of their intervention.
“ABVI is so appreciative of the support of the Medical Society. This funding allows our Tri-County neighbors with visual impairments to access critical skills training such as white cane training in conjunction with assistive technology training to aid in travel. This grant will also allow us to track the impact these skills will have on our clients’ mental health including whether helping clients move around more safely improves rates of depression, quality of life and isolation,” said Bryson Young, Chief Advancement Officer for ABVI.
ABVI provides in-person training at their Charleston vision rehabilitation facility, virtual training for most classes as well as in-home and community-based services for select trainings. To learn more about ABVI, visit www.abvisc.org.
