Art of Jazz Concert Series Returns to the Gibbes Museum

Charleston Jazz’s 2023 Art of Jazz Series promises to be a musical masterpiece, featuring a stellar lineup of celebrated local musicians. In collaboration with the Gibbes Museum of Art, the series showcases original compositions inspired by the museum’s works on display. Among the headliners are Abdiel Iriarte, Heather Rice, and Manny Houston, who are sure to captivate audiences with their unique styles and talents.

The Abdiel Iriarte Experiment will headline the Art of Jazz Series on Wednesday, June 21st. A Venezuelan-born pianist, Iriarte will be joined by Tim Khayat on electric bass and Gabriel Fuenmayor on drums. Known for his captivating performances and fiery Latin and Afro-Cuban style, Iriarte has composed a series of original songs inspired by the works of Damian Stamer, a cutting-edge artist who leverages the power of AI technology in his pieces. Iriarte’s passionate performance combined with Stamer’s unparalleled creations will provide audiences with a once-in-a-lifetime immersive experience.

On July 19th at 6 pm, Heather Rice and Friends will take the stage. Rice is a Charleston-based artist known for her powerful voice and intelligent songwriting. She has opened for for Joan Osborne, Sheryl Crow, and Lady Antebellum. She co-wrote “Like Make Believe” for Hootie and the Blowfish artist, Mark Bryan and was a featured performer in the Las Vegas smash hit and Drama Desk Award-winning show, Toxic Audio. Heather Rice heads Red Lion Recording, her independent record label, where she releases her original music.  Heather will be joined by Tyler Ross on Guitar and Stuart White on drums.

Manny Houston will headline the Art of Jazz series on August 16th at 6pm. Houston is a multi-talented musician, performer, and songwriter with a passion for creating unforgettable musical experiences. Raised in South Carolina, Manny began his musical journey playing piano in his father’s church, later earning a degree in classical piano from the College of Charleston. Manny has starred in off-Broadway shows, performed in residency in Las Vegas with Freestyle Love Supreme (with Lin Manuel and Wayne Brady), and also worked as a songwriter under the mentorship of Stargate, NeYo and other industry heavyweights. With a passion for excellence and dedication, Manny is a true master of his craft.
