Chaplaincy Grows Team with Therapy K9 Mushi

The Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy this week announced that it now has a nationally certified Therapy K9 Team serving the community. Their new therapy dog, Mushi, will be serving first responders through station visits and Community Engagement events.

Mushi is a one-year-old Labrador/Pyreneese mix, rescued and trained by the Paws and Stripes College therapy dog program of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. Mushi and his sister were found by a dumpster at the age of about 10 months.

Mushi means “chaplain” in Chinese. It also means “sensitive/feeling” in the Hebrew Bible, and has a theological reference as “one who withdraws or takes away.” Mushi is also an anime character that represents the most basic state of being, the essence of life.

Darcy Boykin, community outreach coordinator, will be serving as Mushi’s handler. After three months of training, Mushi is now qualified and available to serve first responders. Mushi and Darcy have already earned a nationally recognized Multi Discipline Therapy K9 Team Certification and a Law Enforcement Investigative Therapy Dog Certification.

In his first two days on duty, he has brought joy to nearly 250 first responders and first responder administration staff in Charleston and Dorchester Counties.
