Warrick Dunn Delivers Dream Home Surprises for Two Charleston-Area Single Mothers
Two hardworking and resilient single mothers this week became first-time homeowners through East Cooper Habitat for Humanity, and when they arrived at their new houses on June 20th, each was surprised with $10,000 worth of furnishings from Aaron’s and a $5,000 down-payment assistance check from Warrick Dunn Charities (WDC).
These are the 215th and 216th home celebrations nationwide by WDC, as the former NFL star’s nonprofit identifies single parents across the country and helps them achieve their goal of first-time homeownership as part of its “Homes for the Holidays” program. While the new homes are purchased and financed independently, Aaron’s provides $10,000 worth of home furnishings, turning an empty shell into a move-in ready dream home on day one. Additionally, WDC delivers a $5,000 down-payment assistance check and finishing touches with the help of Ryan Jumonville and the American Opportunity Foundation.
The families:
- Antisha and her son, Bryce, lived in overcrowded conditions with eight family members sharing a four-bedroom, one-bathroom house. They dreamt of a “coastal retreat” where they can come home after spending time at the beach. Bryce looks forward to practicing football in the yard so he can continue growing as a linebacker for the East Cooper Warhawks. In addition to having a new sense of stability in her own home, Antisha also hopes to become a foster parent and knows having a three-bedroom home will make this possible.
- After living in a rental house that had rotting floors, black mold and no working HVAC system, Patrice and her three children are beyond thrilled to have a safe, welcoming place they can call home. In addition to poor conditions inside the house, they had been living in a crime-ridden neighborhood in downtown Charleston, where the children were scared to use the neighborhood pool or park. Now, the family is ready to relax on their front porch, cook meals together in the kitchen and make new memories in their home.
