SC Whitmore School awards 156 diplomas to 2023 graduates

Columbia, SC – SC Whitmore School (SCWS), an online public high school based in Columbia, is excited to announce the graduation of 156 high school students during the 2022 – 2023 school year. This includes 33 winter graduates, 123 spring graduates. 

Executive Director Kim Dunbar said, “We are so proud of all of our graduates. SCWS set record highs this year with our winter and spring graduates. We are humbled these students and parents trusted us on their educational journey and we look forward to seeing their continued success.”

SC Whitmore School continues to show the state of South Carolina and beyond the positive impact online learning is having in the lives of hundreds and thousands of young people.

Families and friends were able to celebrate the Class of 2023 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on June 3rd, 2023. They listened to presentations from the faculty and staff and heard commencement messages from the Valedictorian, Francesca Lopes, and SCWS Student Body President, Ava Roscoe. The graduates officially become alumni of SCWS after Stig Rasmussen, SCWS Board Chair conferred the graduates.

During the spring graduation, SCWS had a total of 123 students graduate. This included more than $1.1 million dollars in scholarships from the graduates.

SCWS was excited to award seven students with a $1,000 merit-based scholarship. These seven students are classified as Jessica Munyon Memorial Scholars. The students must earn a minimum GPA of 4.0 in SCWS courses and be enrolled in SCWS for at least one year, in addition to submitting an essay and receiving a recommendation from a teacher.

This year there were also 31 students who graduated high school either one or two years early, compared to the traditional four years of high school.

The 2023 SCWS Valedictorian, Francesca Lopes is an honors graduate, a member of the National Honors Society, and received perfect attendance while at SC Whitmore School. Francesca graduated from SCWS with a 5.46 GPA. After graduation, Francesca is planning to attend the University of Porto (Portugal).

The 2023 SCWS Salutatorian is Caroline Tiller. Caroline is an honors student, who completed her final year in high school studying abroad in Spain because of the flexibility of SC Whitmore School. She graduated from SCWS with a 5.42 GPA. After graduation, Caroline is planning to attend the University of South Carolina as an International Studies Major.

SCWS Principal, Ebone Adams, has seen the Class of 2023 succeed as students and excel in their education.

They’ve shared their exceptional talents, intellect, and character in every aspect of their high school career. They have excelled not only academically, but also in their extracurricular pursuits, community service, leadership roles, and artistic endeavors. The accomplishments of these graduates may not have been possible without the guidance and support of their families, friends, teachers, staff, and mentors. We are extremely grateful, that they chose SC Whitmore School to complete their high school journey. We wish them all the best and we know they will continue to make us proud!”
