Opelika, Alabama – State Representative and Civil Rights Attorney Marvin Pendarvis (above) has been retained to represent the family of Lucius Benjamin Gibbs, a Black man from Cross, South Carolina, who was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies in Lee County, Alabama on June 9th, 2023. There is also a local Alabama attorney that will be working this case alongside the legal team for the Racial Justice Network, which Rep. Pendarvis is a part of.
Representative Pendarvis, members of the National Racial Justice Network, and the Gibbs family met with the Lee County Sheriff’s office on June 27, 2023. Following their meeting, the group held a press conference to demand transparency throughout the investigation and the immediate release of the body camera and dash camera footage of the incident.
“We demand that the Lee County Sheriff’s Office operate with transparency and release any and all video footage to the public and the family’s attorneys,” said Representative Pendarvis.
Dr. Candance Brewer of the Racial Justice Network added: “We’re not here to point fingers at anyone; we just want whatever happened to be disclosed in a timely fashion. Body cam videos, 911 calls, incident reports, etc.”
