Charleston residents and visitors are invited to join the Hampstead Day Planning Committee on July 15th, from 12 pm to 4 pm, at Hampstead Park for a momentous occasion: the unveiling of a long-awaited historic marker. This event promises to be a day filled with reverence for our city’s rich past, delightful culinary experiences, captivating live music, and immersive historic walking tours.
Hampstead Park, cherished as Charleston’s oldest park established in 1769, will serve as the picturesque backdrop for this significant unveiling. Located in the heart of downtown Charleston’s Eastside, the park has witnessed generations of historical events and cultural milestones. Now, it’s time to honor and commemorate the importance of this iconic landmark.
The ceremony will commence at 12 pm with opening remarks at 1 pm from esteemed partners, including Mayor John Tecklenburg. Their inspiring words will reflect on the historical significance of Hampstead Park and underscore the importance of preserving our heritage for future generations.
“Hampstead Mall is one of the most significant parks in Charleston. It was one of the first designated greenspaces in the city and it has witnessed many events and community changes in its 250 year history “, said historian and local, Christina Butler.
Food enthusiasts will be delighted by the presence of a diverse array of food trucks offering an assortment of culinary delights. To serenade the occasion, members of the renowned Charleston Jazz group will play, providing an unforgettable live music experience.
History buffs and curious attendees can partake in immersive historic walking tours, led by local historians Dr. Nic Butler and Christina Butler. This neighborhood walking tour will delve deep into the captivating stories and history that lie within the vicinity of Charleston’s oldest park.
