Moore Denounces Rep. Mace’s “Hypocrisy on NDAA Abortion Amendment”
Michael B. Moore, a Democrat running for the U.S. House of Representatives in South Carolina’s 1st congressional district, today criticized Rep. Nancy Mace’s decision to vote for an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would make it harder for service members to travel to seek abortions.
“From infrastructure to women’s health, there isn’t an issue on which Nancy Mace won’t flip-flop,” said Moore. “Time and again, Nancy Mace puts petty politics over the people of South Carolina. And now, she’s bowing to extreme Republicans instead of bolstering our national security.”
Prior to her vote Thursday, and in the aftermath of the amendment’s House passage, Mace repeatedly defended the existing Pentagon policy and criticized the Republican proposal — which was approved by a narrow margin of 221-213.
- Fox News: “What are we doing this week in the NDAA? Potentially messing with women who are traveling out of state [to get an abortion],” Mace said. She added the policy “doesn’t fund the abortion itself. This reimburses women for travel that have had the medical procedure, allows them some time to recover before they go back to work.”
- POLITICO: “We should not be taking this fucking vote, man. Fuck,” a visibly frustrated Mace was overheard venting to her staff in an elevator, apparently referring to Thursday’s vote to reverse Biden administration policy on reimbursing travel costs for service members seeking abortions. “It’s an asshole move, an asshole amendment.”
- CNN: “Nancy Mace, who has been critical of her party on abortion, voted for a GOP amendment nixing the Pentagon’s abortion policy. While she defended her vote, she said: ‘We got to stop being assholes to women, stop targeting women and do the things that make a real difference.'”
Responding today to Mace’s vote, Moore said: “It takes a special kind of hypocrisy to vote against women’s health and then complain about ‘targeting women.’ But for Washington’s most notorious flip-flopper, Nancy Mace, it’s just another day on the job.”
