We Are Family’s Shares Back-to-School Programs for LGBTQI+ Youth in Charleston
Back-to-school season is upon us and Tri-County-based nonprofit We Are Family (WAF) is committed to making back to school seamless for LGBTQI+ youth through their numerous social support groups and mental health assistance programs.
See below for more details about WAF’s vital programs including SafeSpace, QueerSpace, and The Q Crewm which allow youth to connect within the LGBTQI+ community and Art Therapy Groups provided in partnership with MUSC’s Arts in Healing Program.
- SafeSpace is designed for middle and high school-aged youth (18 and under) with weekly meetings on Tuesdays at 7 pm. These meetings alternate between virtual and in-person, with the next in-person meeting on August 1st
- QueerSpace is designed for young adults aged 18-24 and offers in-person meetings on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. Upcoming meetings will take place on August 12th and August 26th
- The Q Crew is a social support group for queer and trans Black Indigenous People of Color aged 16-24. In addition to virtual biweekly meetings, members 18+ can join QueerSpace’s in-person meet-ups on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month.
We Are Family also offers their new Art Therapy group for high school-aged youth. Art Therapy is run by licensed Art Therapists from the Medical University of South Carolina and does not require any art skills. Art Therapy will be held twice in August, with the next meeting at the Equality Hub on August 2nd.
