2023 Folly Beach Wahine Classic Declared a Low-Waste Event

The Folly Beach Wahine Classic and the Charleston Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation are thrilled to declare that the 2023 all-female surf contest was truly a low-waste event.

Hosted July 29th and 30th, the non-profit surf contest strived to be a single-use plastic free, low-waste event. Partnering with Charleston Surfrider to host a sustainability giveaway for the first time in 21 years, competitors were encouraged to bring their own reusable items like water bottles to be entered to win sustainable prizes. Eco-friendly compostable cups and utensils were provided as needed.

During and after the contest, non-reusable items were disposed of using Charleston Surfrider’s three-part resource recovery sorting system; recycling, compost, and landfill trash. Charleston Surfrider volunteers worked the resource recovery sorting system as an opportunity to educate attendees and eliminate contaminations. As a result of their efforts, 125lbs of the total waste made their way to the industrial composting facility thanks to the Keep Charleston Beautiful low-waste program, 62lbs of waste was recycled, and only 17lbs of waste was sent to the landfill.

“Our goal is to educate and inspire others to correctly host more low-waste events, even small gatherings. It requires education about the materials used and support from different parties to make it happen. We are super proud of all the spectators, competitors, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone else who helped make this competition a true low-waste event!” said Becky Sheftall, member of Charleston Surfrider.
