Charleston Democratic Socialists of America Endorse Mika for Mayor

The members of Charleston Democratic Socialists of America have voted to endorse Mika Gadsden for mayor of Charleston.

The local chapter of 270 members held an extended and multi-tiered endorsement process and voted overwhelmingly to support Gadsden’s campaign.

Here’s what the organization had to say:

“Mika stands apart from a crowded field of candidates as the transformative leader this city deserves. We have confidence in her ability to shift the priorities of a city that has obeyed the will of capitalists, bosses, landlords, and developers for far too long.

Charleston DSA believes strongly that this city needs progressive and community-focused leadership. We see the results in sky-rocketing rental costs, the lack of affordable housing, inadequate public transportation, and increased flooding and environmental degradation. Charleston is a city built by enslaved labor and continues to fail in addressing its historical, systemic, and ongoing racial disparities. We believe Mika Gadsden’s candidacy offers a chance for the City of Charleston to begin to correct this course and reorient itself toward a future built on justice, equality, and sustainability.

The field of candidates offers many options for those who are content with the status quo. There are multiple candidates who represent the interests that already govern this city. The number of candidates means that a people-powered campaign, like Mika’s, has a real chance to win and bring about change. A few hundred votes can change the outcome of this election. A few thousand can change the future of this city. We strongly encourage all working people to vote this November for Mika Gadsden for mayor.

Mika has proven herself committed to community-centered solutions and problem-solving. She is not beholden to corporate or real estate developer interests. She has fought hard alongside the Friends of Gadsden Creek for environmental justice and stood alongside us and many others in demanding that Charleston do better for the people who make it run. She is a renter, a daughter of Jim Crow refugees, and a working-class candidate who understands the meaning of solidarity.

Charleston DSA plans to mobilize our 270 members and all our supporters to canvass and advocate for Mika’s candidacy. We encourage everyone who wants a Charleston that works for all to get involved with her campaign.”
