Meals on Wheels Announces Challenge Grant
Press Release
Meals on Wheels (MOW) of Horry and Georgetown Counties is delighted to announce that an anonymous donor has issued a $75,000 Challenge Grant to the community to support MOW in its campaign to buy land and build a new facility.
Executive Director Michael Snuggs said, “Honestly, this can only be from the Lord! We only have about a month to find a new kitchen or 500+ local homebound, elderly and/or terminally ill people in our community will be without nutritional support.”
The Challenge Grant will be paid when Meals On Wheels is able to raise sufficient funds from other sources, which may be used to stimulate giving from other donors in the region. Challenge grants strengthen the institutional funding base and organizational capacity for nonprofit organizations in the long term.
The Challenge Grant will be used to support MOW’s purchase land and construct a new facility. This endeavor was spurred by the 100% rent increase imposed upon MOW for the upcoming year by its current landlords. The MOW Board of Directors decided that it was prudent to secure land and start construction of a new facility so that it has a permanent home to provide meals to seniors in Horry and Georgetown counties. In the past year, MOW has seen an increase in need for its services from 300 meals a week to 2,500 meals per week – a more than 800% increase in its senior meals program.
