Chamber Music Charleston to Present Trio Of Performances to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
Chamber Music Charleston brings three distinctive programs to audiences in the greater Charleston Area between September 15th and 17th, all in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Audiences can join in a celebration of Hispanic food, music, and culture at the family-friendly “Fiesta on the Square” in Summerville on September 15th, presented by Chamber Music Charleston, Latin Grooves, and Summerville Parks and Recreation.
The event will feature performances by acclaimed Argentinian Bandoneon player and composer JP Jofre (above) and virtuoso violinist Francisco Fullana in addition to a variety of Latin Music provided by Luigi Bravo of Latin Groove. La Quin will give Salsa lessons, International Ballroom Dance Studio will provide a Tango demonstration with lessons, and Bomba y Plena de Puerto Rico by Jose & Luz will wrap up the evening’s dance offerings.
There will be a wide range of food to choose from, from Argentinian delicacies provided by Patagonian Queen and Diego’s Empanadas to a variety of tasty bites from Venezuela, Salvador, Ecuador, Mexico, and Colombia.
The “Cultural Esplanade” will feature various organizations and artists including Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston, Circulos de Bienstar, Summerville Orchestra, Flowertown Players, and Sclupture in the South.
The event takes place outdoors on Hutchinson Square Park, Summerville, from 6 pm to 9 pm.
On Saturday, September 16th at 11 am at Sottile Theatre Chamber Music Charleston launches their Classical Kids Concert Series with a special program developed for Hispanic Heritage Month. After a brief introduction to the instruments, the students will be treated to a musical adaptation of the children’s book “Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreño Played the Piano for President Lincoln.” With music set to the text and images from the book projected onto a screen, the students will learn about Teresa Carreño, a child prodigy who fled her homeland of Venezuela during the Revolution and emigrated to the United States just as the Civil War was beginning.
The grand finale of the weekend is “Tango meets Classical,” an innovative program of music combining original Argentinian bandoneon music with traditional chamber music on September 17th at Sottile Theatre. Classical music merges with the sultry sounds of the tango as musician perform original works by JP Jofre, including “Como el Agua,” “Primavera,” and “Tango Movements.” The concert concludes with Richard Strauss’ blazingly energetic Piano quartet. The program features guest artists JP Jofre on bandoneon and violinist Francisco Fullana performing alongside CMC violist Ben Weiss, cellist Daniel Mumm, bassist Olivia Salas, and pianist Chee-Hang See.
Native from San Juan, Argentina, Juan Pablo Jofre Romarion aka JP Jofre, is a GRAMMY® Award-nominated composer and bandoneon player. A recipient of the National Prize of the Arts grant in Argentina, Mr. Jofre has been repeatedly highlighted by the New York Times and praised as one of today’s leading artists by Great Performers at Lincoln Center. His music has been recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and Paquito D’ Rivera, among others. He has performed and given lectures at Google Talks, TEDtalks, The Juilliard School of Music, and The New School, etc.
Spanish-born violinist Francisco Fullana, winner of the 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant, has been hailed as an “amazing talent” (Gustavo Dudamel) and “frighteningly awesome” (Buffalo News). His solo violin album Bach’s Long Shadow, was named BBC Music Magazine’s Instrumental Choice of the Month. Active as a chamber musician, Francisco is a performing artist at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and has participated in the Marlboro Music Festival. As a concerto soloist, he has performed with numerous orchestras across the globe, including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Appollo’s Fire, and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia.
