Tag Along with the Monarchs on their Migration to Mexico: Katie’s Krops to Tag Monarch Butterflies from Monarch Meadows
Press Release
Make way for the Monarch Migration! On Friday, September 15th, Katie’s Krops will partner with Dorchester 4-H Leader Molly Jones to tag the monarch butterflies that have hatched in Monarch Meadows before they migrate to Mexico. The event will take place in the Katie’s Krops Outdoor Classroom at 11 am. Kids kindergarten age and up will be in attendance, as well as members of ‘Team Monarch’ who have established a mission to save the endangered Monarch Butterfly by building a butterfly house and planting milkweed, the host plant of the monarch.
Every fall people all over North America carefully catch monarch butterflies and place a tiny ID sticker on one wing. The tagged butterflies are released to continue their journeys. Tagging helps answer questions about the origins of monarchs that reach Mexico, the timing and pace of their migration, mortality during the migration, and changes in geographic distribution. Monarch butterflies are plummeting toward extinction due to landscape-scale threats from pesticides, development, and climate change. In July 2022, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) re-classified the migratory monarch butterfly as endangered on its “red list.” This is the second year Katie’s Krops will participate in the tagging process.
Katie Stagliano, Founder of Katie’s Krops shared, “We are very proud of the role our young Katie’s Krops volunteers are playing in helping to save the endangered Monarch butterfly. By building our butterfly house, we have protected and released over 65 monarchs to date, and our butterfly house is currently filled with butterflies, chrysalises, and caterpillars, and we are hitting peak season. It is wonderful to see the released butterflies stay in the garden to lay their eggs and continue the process. We are excited to see where the Monarchs we hatched journey to via the tagging process.”
