“Unyielding Gaze” Now On View at the Gibbes Art Sales Gallery

A new exhibition, Unyielding Gaze by former visiting artist Reuben Bloom, is now on view in the Gibbes Museum of Art’s Art Sales Gallery. This immersive exhibition is a visual-physical journey through a city in flux, an introspective quest, and a call for ecological mindfulness. It will be on view until October 29th.

Unyielding Gaze urges viewers to recognize the fragile balance between preservation and ephemerality, relating to the iconic architecture of Charleston. The utilitarian homes, once assigned to wartime laborers on what was deemed valueless land, tell stories of resilience and impermanence. Today, as construction advancements shift new terrains, these historical neighborhoods bear the brunt of gentrification’s relentless erasure. Guided by the legacy of photographic giants like Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans, enriched by street-side dialogues and academic discourse, this collection yields discoveries that are both spontaneous and weighted with intent. It is both a portrait of a city in flux and a contemplative introspection.

Bloom has been exploring fine art photography for more than 12 years. Following a residency program, Bloom’s longtime practice of street photography led him to a sculpture and found-object-based studio practice that explores themes, materials, and motifs generated by his images. He is a member of the Goodyear Arts Collective in Charlotte, where he maintains a studio.
