Community Kitchen of Myrtle Beach Receives Grant from Hootie and the Blowfish Foundation
Press Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Community Kitchen of Myrtle Beach is proud to announce that it has received a grant from the Hootie and the Blowfish Foundation (HBF). The three-year, $30,000 grant is to support The Children’s Hunger Initiative Program and was chosen by the band and funded through their foundation held at Central Carolina Community Foundation.
Six years ago, Community Kitchen saw a gap in that 1 in 4 children in Horry County go hungry. Determined to fill this gap, the organization introduced its Children’s Hunger Initiative Program (CHIP). This program focuses on feeding the children in our surrounding community by providing them with after-school snacks during the school year and a nutritious lunch during the summer months. Community Kitchen partners with the Racepath Community Center, the Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA, and Myrtle Beach’s Recreation Department at Pepper Geddings & Mary C. Canty facilities.
The Community Kitchen was among several South Carolina nonprofit organizations selected for grants by the members of the band Hootie and the Blowfish – Darius Rucker, Jim “Soni” Sonefield, Dean Felber, and Mark Bryant.
The majority of funding for HBF comes from “Monday After the Masters” (MAM), a celebrity pro-am golf tournament held in Myrtle Beach after The Masters Tournament in April. Since its inception in 2000, HBF has donated over $2.9 million to over 200 charitable causes.
Sean Mazur, executive director of Community Kitchen of Myrtle Beach, said “We are incredibly grateful to the Hootie and the Blowfish for this significant grant and thank them for helping us support the people of Myrtle Beach with much needed meals in these challenging times.”
