PURE Theatre and @HotInCharleston Announce “Midlife Monologues”
Press Release
PURE Theatre and @HotinCharleston are proud to announce Midlife Monologues, an intergenerational showcase on a woman’s journey. The event will take place on October 24 at 6:30 pm at the Cannon Street Arts Center (134 Cannon Street in Charleston).
Midlife Monologues, an homage to Vagina Monologues, features an award-winning cast of creatives — from their teens to their sixties — who will shine a light on the challenges and joys of a woman’s life, from turning 30 to the anxieties of motherhood to the hot bright light of menopause. Performers include award-winning actress and activist, Joy Vandervort-Cobb; award-winning memoirist and Pulitzer jurist, Cinelle Barnes; Charleston Poet Laureate, Asiah Mae; co-founder and Artistic Director of PURE Theatre, Sharon Graci; award-winning essayist and community builder, Kerri Devine; writer and editor, Stephanie Hunt; noted author and educator, Melissa Falcon Field; celebrated Charleston artist and painter, Anne Darby Parker along with her daughter, fashion creative Amelia Parker; local singer-songwriter, Jasmine Commerce; and Sorelle, the breakout young vocal trio from The Voice.
Doors will open at 6:30 pm for community connection, wine and mocktails, and authors’ books will be available for purchase from the Buxton Books team. The performance begins at 7:00 pm with a special prologue by Emmy award-winning WCBV-TV anchor and women’s health advocate, Carolyn Murray.
Tickets are $51, $41, and $31, with $15 streaming tickets also available. Online purchasing is now open at www.puretheatre.org.
“PURE Theater has always sought to inspire thought, ignite dialogue, and contribute to the exchange of ideas, aspirations, and inspirations of our community. We are proud to produce this event in partnership with @HotinCharleston and to do so with a cast of talented women in the true spirit of community theater,” said Sharon Graci, PURE’s founder and artistic director.
“This show is part of a larger cultural movement to redefine midlife in all its potential for women everywhere: in the family, in the workplace, and in our collective imagination. That’s why we’re taking intergenerational storytelling to the stage, where leading lights in the arts will express the hopes, challenges, and lived experiences of women in every decade of life,” said Kerri Devine, who founded @HotinCharleston, a midlife community, based on her experience in perimenopause. The show takes place during World Menopause Month.
A portion of event proceeds will go to MUSC Arts in Healing which provides creative arts therapy and education, and Mugs for Moms, which uses the arts to support the emotional health of women in the perinatal years. The event, the first of its kind, is being supported by Charleston YWCA and Buxton Books, who will be on hand with signed books of author-participants.
