State Representative Pendarvis Renews Call for North Charleston’s Independent School District
State Representative Marvin Pendarvis today reiterated his call for North Charleston to establish its own school district in the wake of a contentious decision made by the Charleston County School Board on Monday, September 25th. During the board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Eric Gallien was placed on paid administrative leave despite being on the job for less than three months.
Representative Pendarvis said this recent incident “further underscores the board’s dysfunction,” which, in his view, “takes precedence over the pursuit of increased educational outcomes for students.” He argues that North Charleston students bear the brunt of this dysfunction.
“The unfortunate reality is that this School Board appears more focused on dysfunction than on improving educational outcomes for our students,” Rep. Pendarvis said. “This hurts North Charleston students more than anyone. It’s time for our community to have the autonomy to make decisions that prioritize student success over internal discord.”
In his commitment to addressing this issue, Representative Pendarvis filed bill 4043, which aims to grant North Charleston the authority to form its own school district.
