Congressional Candidate Mac Deford Releases Statement on Charleston County School Board’s Decision Concerning Superintendent

Democratic Congressional Candidate Mac Deford released the following statement on the Charleston County School Board’s decision concerning Superintendent Dr. Eric Gallien:

“The recent decision by the Charleston County School Board of Trustees to place Superintendent Dr. Eric Gallien on leave raises deeply concerning questions about transparency, integrity, and the rule of law in our school district. This decision, which came without any clear explanation or detail as to the cause, is particularly alarming given community allegations of racism and certain Board members’ connection to Moms for Liberty Board members Carlotte Bailey, Edward Kelly, Keith Grybowski, Leah Whatley, and Pamela McKinney, all endorsed by Moms for Liberty, are not operating from a place of transparency, fairness, or trustworthiness. They are public officials elected to represent the best interests of Charleston County’s schools and its students. As such, they are bound by the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act. Their conduct, especially in light of these recent events, calls into question their commitment to uphold the law and the broader principles of government transparency.

In 2022, the South Carolina Attorney General had to warn the School Board over alleged FOIA violations. Given the recent turn of events, I firmly believe it is appropriate for the Attorney General to once again review the actions of these Board members to protect the interests of Charleston County’s students and residents.

To Board Members Courtney Waters, Darlene Roberson, Dr. Carol Temple, and Daron Lee Calhoun: know that the community stands with you. We commend your commitment to our schools, students, and community values.

In the days ahead, I hope to see a swift response and thorough investigation into these matters.”
