A basketball coach with Fort Dorchester High School in Dorchester School District Two was inducted into the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Hall of Fame for her contributions to international competitive basketball.

As part of the 12-member class of 2023, Katrina McClain was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in Manila, Philippines, on August 23, 2023. The honor recognizes her accomplished professional basketball career overseas in Japan, Italy, Spain, and Turkey.

McClain’s accolades include:

  • Three-time Olympic medalist (1988 & 1996 – gold, 1992- bronze)
  • Three-time World Championships medalist (1986 &1990 – gold, 1994 – bronze)
  • Two-time Pan American Games medalist (1987-gold, 1991 – bronze)
  • Three-time Goodwill Games medalist (1986 & 1990 – gold, 1985 – silver)

McClain played basketball at the University of Georgia and reached the NCAA finals in 1985. She was honored as an All-American (1986 & 1987), NCAA Female Player of the Year (1987), and with the retirement of her jersey (#32).

After college, McClain played professionally in Japan (Kyoto Petroleum, 1989-91), Italy (Sidis Ancona, 1992), Spain (Valencia, 1993-95), Turkey (Galatasaray 1995-96), and finished her playing career in the United States (Atlanta Glory, 1996-97).

McClain was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (2006), the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2012), and the FIBA Hall of Fame (2023). She was also honored with a prestigious award named after her, the Katrina McClain Award (2018), which is presented annually to the NCAA’s best women’s basketball power forward.

McClain joined the Fort Dorchester staff in 2018 as a special education job coach. She assisted with the girls basketball team from 2020-2023 and was named head coach this past spring.

“We are so excited to have Coach McClain step into the role as our varsity head coach,” said Principal Tripp Aldredge. “She has been an integral part of our programs for a while, and she is an incredible servant leader who instills character, responsibility, and work ethic in all of her athletes. Clearly, she has the skills, knowledge, and experience to lead our program to the next level. We jumped at the opportunity to have Coach McClain, a world-class athlete and world champion, take the helm. She is a giant in the basketball world, and it is crazy to think about the opportunity our student-athletes have to learn from her. We are so excited to watch this program soar!”
