BVRE Reminds Charleston Co. Residents of Important Election Dates, Deadlines
Charleston County residents are encouraged to ensure their voter registration information is up to date as deadlines near for this year’s municipal elections and for the South Carolina Senate District 42 Special Election.
The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (BVRE) is urging residents who plan to vote this fall to register or update their registration information well ahead of time to avoid potential pitfalls at polling places. Registration deadlines for this fall’s municipal elections and for the South Carolina Senate District 42 Special Election are as follows:
- In person – Oct. 6, 2023 at 5 pm
- Online/Fax – Oct. 8, 2023 at 11:59 pm
- By mail (Postmarked) – Oct. 10, 2023
“Your vote is your voice. It holds the power to shape the future of Charleston County, but you can only use it if you register in time,” said BVRE Executive Director Isaac Cramer. “Our office offers several convenient ways to make sure you’re vote ready. By acting today, you can prepare yourself for an easy experience when you go vote, whether it be during the early voting period or on Election Day.”
Those who need to register to vote or who need to update their information can do so by email, fax, mail, or in person. Additionally, residents can register or provide updates to our office online with a valid South Carolina driver’s license or DMV ID.
The early voting period for this fall’s elections runs from 8:30 am until 5 pm each day from October 23rd through October 27th and October 30th through November 3rd. All eligible Charleston County residents can vote early at any early voting center listed below:

Election Day is Nov. 7, 2023. Eligible Charleston County residents who choose to vote on Election Day will vote at their precincts.
Absentee voting is available for those who qualify. Valid reasons include having employment obligations, attending to a sick of physically disabled person, being confined to a jail or pretrial facility pending disposition of arrest or trial, or being absent from Charleston County during the entire early voting period and on Election
Day. Other qualifying reasons are having physical disabilities, being aged 65 or older, serving as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces or Merchant Marines, or being a spouse or dependent residing with them, or being admitted to a hospital as an emergency patient on the day of the election or within a four-day period before the election. The final day to return an absentee ballot application for these contests is Oct. 27, 2023.
The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections is responsible for conducting all municipal, state, and federal elections that are held in Charleston County. BVRE also conducts outreach events with community members that encourage election education and participation.
