Press Release

Thanks to a $20,000 grant from the BJ’s Charitable Foundation, Lowcountry Food Bank will provide children and their families with nutritious food through our School Market program. School Markets provide students and their families the opportunity to select food items to take home. These permanent pantries are located in Lowcountry Food Bank-partner schools and promote a dignified service experience for our neighbors who experience food insecurity.

34 million people in America face hunger, including more than 9 million children – that’s 1 in 8 households with children. In the 10 coastal South Carolina counties served by Lowcountry Food Bank, 9.6% of the population experiences food insecurity, which represents more than 144,000 of our neighbors. More than 42,000 of this population are children.

“All children, regardless of race or zip code, need nutritious food to thrive. It shouldn’t take a parent skipping a meal for themselves to make sure their child’s basic needs are met,” said Nick Osborne, President and CEO of Lowcountry Food Bank. “We are grateful for BJ’s Wholesale Club’s generosity to help us continue our work at a time when food prices remain high and budgets for millions of families are tightening. BJ’s has been a consistent supporter of our programs that alleviate childhood hunger.”

September is Hunger Action Month® and BJ’s Wholesale Club joined forces with the Feeding America network to raise awareness on the impact of food insecurity in communities across the United States. This year, the BJ’s Charitable Foundation has committed over $1 million to support Feeding America’s mission to end hunger in the U.S.

BJ’s Wholesale Club is proudly committed to helping families meet essential needs. For more than 15 years, the BJ’s and Feeding America partnership has supported food insecurity programs, COVID-19 response programs, and emergency relief efforts. BJ’s clubs and distribution centers have also provided millions of meals to local families in need with donations of unsold fresh food.
