Group Alerts Charleston County Students to Potential Book Bans
On Monday, October 9th, 2023, students on the way to their Charleston County public schools are finding signs saying, “What book will they ban next?”
Community activists from the nonpartisan group Defense of Democracy raised funds locally and gathered volunteers to place the signs. They hope students will get involved in activism to fight censorship in their libraries and their curriculum.
According to Defense of Democracy, during the September 19th Moms for Liberty meeting, members perused a table full of books on the list for banning.
When students follow the QR code on the sign, they’ll see information about book bans and be able to sign up at Defense of Democracy to get notifications to take action.
Defense of Democracy is a bipartisan group that advocates for legislators, educators, and administrators who will work to strengthen communities. We also advocate for a public education system that supports and enhances our shared experiences—regardless of religious beliefs, cultural background, or sexual orientation.
