The Charleston Museum Hosts Dr. Elizabeth J. Reitz for Lecture on the Emergence and Evolution of Carolina’s Colonial Cattle Economy
The Charleston Museum will host Dr. Elizabeth J. Reitz for a discussion about decades of archaeological research that shows the importance of cattle in the early Lowcountry diet and the economy. The event will be held on Thursday, October 19th, from 6 pm to 7 pm.
Early Lowcountry cattle were small and remained so into the 1800s. Although their ancestry is far from resolved, genetic analysis suggests a diverse heritage. These four-legged colonists participated in substantial economic, environmental, and social changes. Dr. Elizabeth Reitz will summarize decades of research on the Lowcountry cattle economy, using the Museum’s historical archaeology collections.
The lecture is the second of a three-part series celebrating the distinguished career of long-time Curator of Historical Archaeology Martha Zierden, featuring noted scholars in the field of archaeology. The finale of the series will take place on November 9th.
The lecture is FREE with a suggested donation of $10. Registration online is recommended or guests can call 843-722-2996 ext. 235. Interview/photo opportunities available on request.
The Charleston Museum is located at 360 Meeting Street.
