Mary Martin Gallery to Presents “Harmonic Interlude” by Kathleen Kinkopf
The public is invited to Mary Martin Gallery on November 3rd for the opening reception of “HARMONIC INTERLUDE” which will be held at 5 pm to 8 pm at 103 Broad Street, Charleston.
Magical Realism describes modern realist paintings with a fantasy or dream-like quality, and the term also perfectly reflects artist Kathleen Kinkopf’s works. These fantastical dialogues within Kinkopf’s work draws her viewers in by their realistic detail and dramatic light. “Once the viewer connects, the painting unveils an illusory world of the unexpected that tickles their imagination and whispers to their soul” says Kinkopf.
Merging both present and past with exquisite detail from an unusual perspective, Kinkopf works from dark to light when creating so as to emphasize depth and emotion in her work. Kinkopf’s signature piece for the upcoming show is titled “MIGRATION” and is a 40” x 30” acrylic and gold leaf painting on canvas. The subject of “MIGRATION” is a woman holding a rabbit and surrounded by the quintessential beauty of the Charleston lowcountry. This painting, like Kinkopf’s others, utilizes crisp lighting, deep shadows, and holds an almost angelic quality. Best described the artist herself, “My paintings are visual stories that invite the viewer to pause and reflect. They capture an intimate moment in time, allowing one to quietly engage in a feeling, a memory, or a spiritual moment”.
While her work inspires the imagination, Kinkopf relies heavily on her own extensive research in order to accurately portray the botanicals, animals, water, light, and landscape features in her paintings. With this special attention to detail, Kinkopf opens the viewers visual receptors and allows for them to be “spoken to” and interpret their own messages from any given piece by Kinkopf.
Kinkopf has exhibited in museums and dozens of gallery exhibitions nationally and internationally. Her work and artistic journey has been documented and published extensively in art publications. Kinkopf’s works are in private and corporate collections across the globe.
