Congressional Candidate Mac Deford Expresses Reservations about Newly Elected House Speaker
Press Release
On October 25th, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) was elected as the new Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, marking the end of a tense 21-day transition. Mac Deford, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, expresses his reservations over the newly elected Speaker.
Deford stated, “Based on Speaker Johnson’s record in Congress, I have strong reservations about him. I strongly disagree with him on a great number of policy matters, from reproductive rights to the 2020 election results. That said, his expressed willingness to collaborate with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries gives me a little hope. Our nation is at a crossroads, and now more than ever, we need leaders on both sides of the aisle who prioritize the American people over divisive politics.”
Johnson, the least experienced speaker in 140 years, is known for his extreme voting record. He is notably recognized for leading an unsuccessful effort by more than 100 House Republicans to invalidate the 2020 presidential election. Additionally, Johnson is known for his extreme anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ positions. Johnson and Rep. Nancy Mace (SC-01) also voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and CHIPS Act.
Deford shared, “Challenges provide opportunity. As Speaker, I genuinely hope Mike Johnson takes this as an opportunity to bridge the divides in the House. I have many doubts about him, but I hope he follows through on his pledge to the American people to lead with a spirit of bipartisanship.”
