Dorchester School District Two Celebrates Food Drive Success, Partnership with Rotary Club of Summerville
During halftime at the October 28th football game between Summerville High School and Fort Dorchester High School, school representatives and the Rotary Club of Summerville celebrated collecting more than 5,000 cans of food for the schools’ food pantries.
Since 2017, the “Kickoff to End Hunger” campaign sponsored by the Rotary Club of Summerville has inspired the schools’ students, staff, and families to collect approximately 22,000 pounds of food. The canned goods will stock the schools’ pantries to help their families in need.
This year, Summerville High School received the trophy for collecting the most cans. SHS collected more than 3,700 cans, and FDHS collected almost 1,400 cans. Over the past six years, each school has won the food drive three times.
SHS Principal Dr. Michelle Leviner said, “I’m incredibly proud of our Green Wave community for coming together and supporting the food drive. Their dedication and generosity filled our school pantry and reflected the close-knit relationships that define our school.”
FDHS Principal Tripp Aldredge said, “This food drive is a powerful testament to how the Fort Family takes care of each other. I am honored to lead Fort Dorchester High School, where we care deeply about one another’s wellbeing, including beyond our school walls.”
Rotary Club of Summerville “Kickoff to End Hunger” Committee Chairman David Powell said, “The commitment and teamwork exhibited by Fort Dorchester and Summerville high schools demonstrate the power of compassion and unity in making a difference for our community, especially for those in need.”
