Press Release

Charleston Mayoral candidate, Clay Middleton, has announced the support of 125+ citizens who support his run to become the next Mayor of Charleston.

Prominent members of the community, some of whom have previously endorsed the incumbent, have spoken out in support of Clay Middleton. Supporters include former and current City Council members, other elected officials, faith leaders, community activists, small business owners, local advocates, etc. You can find the growing list of supporters here.

A Charleston native from Bayside Manor, Burke and Citadel graduate, Lieutenant Colonel in the SC Army National Guard serving as a Battalion Commander, combat veteran, and public affairs professional, Middleton is working to persuade Charleston residents to vote for him to be Charleston’s next Mayor.

“I have known Clay since he was in grade school, and I have watched him grow into a husband, father, and servant leader. Clay has spent years helping me serve the people of Charleston and South Carolina. I know and trust Clay, and you can also. He is a workhorse. He has the vision, leadership, and experience needed to make Charleston affordable, accessible, and livable for all.” said Jim Clyburn, Congressman of the 6th District of South Carolina.

Jaime Harrison, Former US South Carolina Senatorial Candidate, said “Clay embodies every attribute of a public servant – hardworking, caring, dedicated, and selfless. This election provides a real opportunity for Charleston to make history, but more importantly, make a difference. I know and trust Clay. He will do everything in his power not to leave any neighborhood, community, or resident behind.”

The Honorable Courtney Waters, School Board Trustee, said, “Clay is the leader we need as Mayor. He has a vision to create and foster the necessary partnerships between the city and our schools that will truly make a difference for our kids, families, and communities. A vote for Clay is a vote for a stronger future that we all can be proud of.”

“Clay Middleton has the shared vision, focus, and work ethic to serve the citizens of Charleston as our next Mayor. As a former Member of City Council, I know firsthand what is required and what is missing. Clay’s experience can truly move our city forward and not at the expense of leaving others behind. We need this kind of new generational leadership in City Hall that will work for us.” said Reverend Jimmy Gallant, Former City of Charleston Council Member.

Ginny Deerin, Community Leader, said, “Community-driven, bold, servant leadership is why I support Clay Middleton for Mayor, but I also support him because he is ours. Clay grew up in our community, graduated from Burke High School and The Citadel, and raises his family in West Ashley. He has witnessed forty years of Charleston’s growth and change.”

“I was blessed and honored to serve on the Charleston City Council for 24 years. I have seen firsthand what it takes to put people above self, money, and power. I’m supporting Clay Middleton for Mayor of Charleston because he is the best person who embodies that type of servant leadership. This is needed in City Hall. The time has come for us to stop going along to get along and vote for someone who will serve in the best interest of all of Charleston.” said Honorable James Lewis, Jr., Former City of Charleston Council Member.

Charles Brave, Jr., International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1422 President, said “Mr. Middleton is homegrown. He is why we fight so hard to have access to economic opportunities, and social justice, and support people for elected office that will not turn their backs on us.”

Charleston Mayoral candidate, Clay Middleton, said, “I have been very intentional about building a broad coalition, providing hope and opportunity, putting forth ideas and a shared vision, and proving people wrong on what is possible to create a city that works for everyone. Together, each of us can be a new brick in an old foundation.”

“Thank you again to those who put their name on the line. My family and I are eternally grateful.” Middleton said.
