Press Release

We Are Family is excited to host a book signing event with author Raquel Willis (above) at the College of Charleston this Trans Day of Remembrance, November 20! This free-to-attend event will feature a keynote presentation by Raquel in celebration of her debut memoir, “The Risk It Takes to Bloom,” which traces her experience as a Black trans woman. Doors to the School of Education Alumni Center will open at 5 pm. Guests can purchase food and beverages, make flower bouquets at the “Bloom Bar,” and explore vendors before Raquel Willis’ keynote presentation. This will be followed by a Q&A and a meet and greet.

Raquel is a Black transgender activist and author whose fight for intersectionality and Black trans liberation has gained national attention. She co-founded the Transgender Week of Visibility and Action, was named to the 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 and Fast Company’s inaugural Queer 50, and won two GLAAD Media Awards for her powerful work spotlighting trans women of color and trans youth.

We Are Family is offering elevated VIP packages to the event for purchase with all proceeds benefiting the non-profit’s Trans Love Fund. The Trans Love Fund is dedicated to supporting the trans community by providing emergency funds to trans-identified individuals throughout South Carolina for medical, legal, and emergency living expenses. Guests interested in upgrading their experience to this event can do so by purchasing a VIP ticket HERE, which includes a copy of “The Risk It Takes to Bloom,” an exclusive meet and greet with Raquel before the keynote presentation, a swag bag valued at $150 and three drink tickets.

“Our limited notions of gender are holding everyone back, not just trans and nonbinary people,” says Raquel Willis. “The Risk It Takes to Bloom” shows readers how they can all play a role in creating a world where everyone is free to thrive. “I want people to walk away with a curiosity about how the world could be better,” she says.

All proceeds from purchases throughout the night will directly support We Are Family.

For those who would like to support We Are Family’s Trans Love Fund ahead of Trans Day of Remembrance on November 20th, they can donate online here.
