Clay Middleton Endorses John Tecklenburg for Mayor
Press Release
In what may well be a decisive turning point in the Charleston mayor’s race, Tuesday night’s strong third-place finisher, Clay Middleton, emphatically endorsed Mayor John Tecklenburg in his runoff election against developer William Cogswell at a press conference Thursday afternoon outside Charleston City Hall.
“It is because of putting the city first, selfless service, bold servant leadership,” said Middleton, who garnered almost 20 percent of the vote in the first election. “This is why I’m standing with John Tecklenburg and asking voters to go back on or before November 21st and cast your vote for John Tecklenburg.”
Also endorsing Tecklenburg at the press conference was long-time Mayor Joe Riley aide and prominent Middleton supporter, Ginny Deerin, who spoke of Tecklenburg’s proven ability to bring people together.
“I have known John Tecklenburg for 40-plus years,” Deerin said. “I know his mind. I know his heart. I know his record and he has led this city for the last eight years through lots of challenges, from hurricanes to a global pandemic. He is a person who brings people together and doesn’t just work with people that agree with him. He was very gracious when I said I was supporting Clay, because that is the kind of guy he is. So I am enthusiastic and excited to do whatever I can to make sure that we re-elect Mayor Tecklenburg to continue to protect our city and really guide us in the progress that we all want to make.”
Mayor Tecklenburg said, “I’d like to thank Clay and Ginny for their outstanding endorsements today. Clay ran a truly remarkable race, winning almost 20 percent of the vote on election day, and Ginny has been a friend and critical city leader for more years than I can count. I’m truly honored to have their support.”
The Charleston mayor’s runoff election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 21st, 2023. Early voting begins on Wednesday, November 15th, and ends on Friday, November 17th.
