CAIR Calls on Lexington County to Keep MLK Day, Drop Confederate Memorial Day
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on South Carolina’s Lexington County to drop Confederate Memorial Day and keep Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a holiday for county offices.
County officials are considering dropping both holidays to allow offices to stay open more days of the year.
“It is unconscionable to consider dropping a holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a time of growing racism and xenophobia nationwide,” CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said. “We urge county officials to demonstrate their repudiation of racism, white supremacy, and treason by dropping Confederate Memorial Day.”
Hooper noted that CAIR has repeatedly urged the removal of Confederate symbols and racist laws nationwide.
