Fundraiser Created to Support 3rd Generation Gullah-Geechee Farmers Joseph + Helen Fields

Joseph Fields, a third-generation Johns Island Gullah-Geechee farmer, recalls a time when he couldn’t even make it downtown to sell at the farmer’s market because the KKK was marching down King Street. Now, decades later and in the midst of national conversations about race and systemic injustice, he faces new challenges – ones that stem not from his human neighbors, but from deer.

Joseph and his wife, Helen, have partnered with the local nonprofit organization, Earth Heart Growers, to host a fundraiser on Saturday, July 11th from 8:30 am – 2 pm. Their goal is to raise $5,000 to build a fence surrounding 10 acres of organic farmland to protect their crops from deer.

$35 grants you access to a socially-distanced event featuring yoga classes, African dance, meditation, kids yoga, international drumming, native herbal medicine workshops, and more. Participants are invited to bring their own picnic blanket and chairs to enjoy a BYO or pre-order lunch while listening to live reggae music. Food vendors include Amor Healing Kitchen, Stone Soup Collective, and Destiny Community Café.

In a time when so many Charlestonians are wanting to support black-owned businesses, this is a wonderful opportunity to join (sanitized and socially distanced) hands and help our native farmers with this immediate financial need. This event is in partnership with Earth Heart Growers, a 501(c)3 that provides garden, culinary, and farm education to children in Charleston public schools. EHG partnered with Joseph Fields in 2015 to connect public school children with the source of their food and provide access to fresh, affordable organic produce.
