Press Release

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, city of Charleston director of Housing and Community Development Geona Shaw Johnson, and Kim Jackson will come together to recognize the 92nd birthday of civil rights leader Christine Osburn Jackson (right) at 11 am, Friday, July 31, 2020 at Mrs. Jackson’s James Island home, located at 892 Dills Bluff Road. During the event, Mayor Tecklenburg will issue a proclamation marking the occasion.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, Mrs. Jackson will make a brief appearance from a safe distance.

During her 37 years as Executive Director of the YWCA Greater Charleston, from 1966 to 2003, Mrs. Jackson led the expansion of women and girls empowerment programs such as the Y-teens and the annual Tribute to Women in Industry, and also founded the YWCA’s annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration, which is considered the state’s largest tribute to Dr. King.

Mrs. Jackson is first cousin to Coretta Scott King, deceased wife of the slain civil rights leader.

Attendees are asked to practice safe social distancing during this event.
