The Gibbes Museum of Art’s Distinguished Lecture Series Presents Martin Z. Margulies

The Gibbes Museum of Art is pleased to announce that renowned art collector Martin Z. Margulies (right) will be the keynote speaker at the museum’s annual Distinguished Lecture Series, taking place at the Charleston Gaillard Center on November 11, 2020. In addition to safety precautions for those attending the lecture in-person, tickets for a virtual screening will also be available.

“We are committed to continuing this annual program that stimulates public discussion about creativity and the visual arts, while taking all steps necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” says Angela Mack, executive director of the Gibbes Museum of Art. “We are thrilled to be hosting Martin Z. Margulies, whose eye for art continues to drive this industry and create appreciation for artists from all walks of life.”

Martin Z. Margulies is consistently named one of the top 200 art collectors in the world, having taken part in the meteoric rise of the Miami art scene in the late 1990s which gave birth to North America’s largest contemporary art fair, Art Basel Miami. With a true passion for art, Mr. Margulies’ career as an art collector began in 1976 with the purchase of a work by Isamu Noguchi, and he has developed close personal relationships with the many artists he has collected from. Often moving under the radar, Mr. Margulies has gone on to build one of the major collections of contemporary art in the world today, and he is considered to be one of the top 25 photography collectors in the world.

The Margulies Collection is viewed by curators, critics, artists and dealers as one of the most important collections of its kind, focusing on seminal works in the genres of European modernism, abstract expressionism, pop, minimalism, conceptual and more. In 1999, seeking a space to display a growing photography collection, video, installation works and sculpture, Mr. Margulies opened the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, a non-profit institution dedicated to the education and promotion of contemporary art. Housed in a 50,000 square-foot retro-fitted warehouse in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District of Miami, the Warehouse presents seasonal exhibitions, educational programs and an international loan program. The Warehouse is operated and funded by the Martin Z. Margulies Foundation, a 30-year resource for the study and enjoyment of the visual arts.

• Show: 6:00 pm. Staggered arrival times will be scheduled by the Charleston Gaillard Center Ticketing Office and communicated to patrons at the time of ticket purchase.

• Pricing: $50 in-person, $10 virtual live stream

There will be limited tickets available to ensure guests remain socially distanced. The Gaillard Center’s team will ensure all safety precautions are taken, including increased cleaning of the full facility before the lecture, staggered suggested arrival times and temperature checks. Face coverings will be required, and disposable masks will be provided by the Gaillard to anyone who does not have one.

A high-quality virtual stream will also be available. This will make the program available to a much larger audience statistically and geographically, including student groups and community organizations that might not otherwise have access to this engaging program – all without the limitations of location and space.

Tickets will go on sale to Gibbes members on Monday, September 21 and will open to the general public on Friday, September 25. Tickets will be available on the Gaillard website: https://gaillardcenter.org/.
