TODAY Show Honors Teacher from Hopkins, SC Who Wears Costumes to Bring History to Life
As part of NBC News’ TODAY’s week-long “Education Plaza” celebrating teachers who have risen to the challenge of the pandemic in creative ways, host Craig Melvin this morning honored Lakena Ackerman, an 8th-grade social studies teacher from his hometown in Hopkins, South Carolina.
Ackerman has dressed up as everything from a pharaoh to a Civil War general to bring the subjects of her lessons to life.
“I consider it my duty to make sure that [my students] go out into the world as the next citizens of Hopkins, South Carolina, United States, globally,” Ackerman said. “I think if they understand that they have a voice, they’ll change the world.”
