Honoring Sweetgrass Traditions Group Show Opens at Lowcountry Artists Gallery in November

From November 1-30, Lowcountry Artists Gallery will feature basketry created by sweetgrass artist Marie Wine, sweetgrass tables by Pete Rock, watercolors by Sandra Roper, and oil paintings by Norma Morris Cable. These artists have come together in a group show focused on the colorful and varied culture of one of America’s oldest and most important African inspired arts.
Sweetgrass basket weaving came to South Carolina in the late 17th century when the baskets were used in rice and cotton production. This African cultural heritage was brought to the Lowcountry by enslaved African people who finding bullrush, palm, and sweet marsh grass available locally and a welcome connection to their homeland. The craft continues to be handed down from generation to generation, with each piece a unique work of art that requires much patience and creativity.
Lowcountry Artists Gallery will hold a public reception for the artists Honoring Sweetgrass Traditions from 5-8 pm on November 6th. Lowcountry Artists Gallery is open Monday-Saturday from 10:30 am to 6 pm and 1 pm to 5 pm Sundays.
