Heartland Hospice is “All In”
Press Release
Megan Hatfield, manager of business development for Heartland Hospice serving The Low Country, reflects on what being “all in” means.
“Clemson head coach, Dabo Swinney, coined the ‘all in’ phrase with his team. The phrase became the rally cry and a mindset that has since motivated the orange-clad believers. One of those ‘all in’ believers is our patient, Thomas.
Jill, Heartland RN, had been taking care of Thomas for several weeks. They quickly grew close and Jill became a staple to the Thomas family as she developed trust and rapport with Thomas’s wife and son. Over time when Thomas started to decline, he remained comfortable, peaceful and ‘all in’.
I was having lunch with Jill and she mentioned Thomas’s birthday was coming up. She was planning to visit him and deliver a birthday card. While Jill is a devout Carolina fan (Clemson’s biggest rival), I knew she would be ‘all in’ for his birthday. In true Jill-form, she orchestrated our chaplain, Kevin, and social worker, Linda, to be there with her during the birthday celebration for Thomas. There were big balloons and of course, a special cake with Clemson colors. Jill and Linda wore Carolina shirts to bring a playful rivalry to the party but made sure to also give Thomas Clemson treats inside his Clemson adorned bag to help make his birthday even more special. Shortly after his party, Thomas passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family and friends.
Kindness costs nothing. Our team goes above and beyond, not just for Thomas, but for all our patients and their families to ensure a meaningful experience with us during their hospice journey. The team is ‘all in’ every single day and I couldn’t be more grateful for them.”
