Charleston Municipal Golf Course Reopens Following Extensive Renovation
Press Release
This morning, Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, Golf Course Architect Troy Miller, representatives of Friends of the Muni, members of City Council and County Council, and community leaders held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Charleston Municipal Golf Course following its first major upgrade in nearly six decades.
Project details: Plans for the renovation were created by Troy Miller of Miller Golf Design, and construction was performed by NMP Golf Construction Corp.
The renovation, which began in January 2020 and totaled just over $2 million, was paid for through a combination of city funds, recreation bond proceeds and money raised via a private fundraising campaign led by Friends of the Muni.
What’s new: The renovation of the 18-hole course included efforts to enhance the quality of playing conditions, while ensuring that it remained affordable and accessible for all.
Upgrades to the course include:
- Greens rebuilt to modern day standards and restored to their original size, with historic design elements reintroduced.
- Scenic vistas opened along the Stono River.
- New ponds and wetlands created to help alleviate longstanding drainage issues on the course.
- Tees rebuilt to accommodate the 50,000 to 60,000 rounds played at the Muni each year.
- Bunkers rebuilt and relocated for modern day play.
- New short game practice area to facilitate additional junior and adult golf programs.
State of play: The course is now open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.
Tee times are required for play, and can be made up to one week in advance online (here), in person or by phone (843-795-6517, ext. 2).
Masks are required throughout the clubhouse and any time when social distancing is not possible during play. The pro-shop and dining area are both open at a limited capacity.
To minimize contact on common surfaces, golf ball washers and coolers have been removed from the course, and players are asked not to remove flagsticks when putting. Water bottles will be available for purchase on the beverage cart and in the clubhouse.
