CCPL and the Lowcountry Food Bank Bring Afterschool Snacks to the Library

The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) and the Lowcountry Food Bank (LFB) are working together to alleviate child hunger in Charleston by providing afterschool snacks at five library branches. The free, nutritious snacks are available to kids and teens from 3 pm to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

This program was originally piloted at three branches in early 2020, but the expansion allows CCPL and LFB to serve a wider range of areas in need throughout the County.

“During difficult times like these, it’s more important than ever to provide help and resources to our community,” said CCPL Community Engagement Manager Devon Andrews. “We are so grateful to the Lowcountry Food Bank for helping us expand this crucial service and provide vital food access to even more families in need throughout Charleston County.”

Beginning Monday, January 11th, the program will be offered at five branches:

  • Cooper River Memorial Library (3503 Rivers Ave)
  • Dorchester Road Regional Library (6325 Dorchester Rd)
  • John L. Dart Library (1067 King St)
  • Main Library (68 Calhoun St.)
  • St. Paul’s Hollywood Library (5130 Hwy 165, Hollywood)

Snacks are being provided through the LFB’s Kids Café program, and feature nutritious options such as fruit, cheese, yogurt and muffins.

“Kids Café aims to help alleviate child hunger through the provision of nutritious meals served in after-school settings to children at-risk of food insecurity,” said LFB Child Hunger Programs manager Kara Moore. “We are proud to continue to work with the library to further our mission to end childhood hunger in coastal South Carolina.”
